The aim of this monograph is to provide a historical and theoretical review of Russian dictionary works, which have left a marked trace in the development of Russian philology, in order to draw upon the experience of tradition in developing topics for modern lexicography, i.e., to provide a scientific perspective and solve scholarly problems. The book also provides a basis for future studies devoted to a versatile evaluation and generalization of the results achieved by Russian lexicography in creating dictionaries of other types and genres: etymological, terminological, bilingual, writers' dictionaries, academic dictionaries, etc.

The book provides a detailed analysis of the main Russian dictionaries, identifies and researches literary and other sources, which formed the basis for the lexicographic editions. The author analyses the lexical structure of the dictionaries from the side of the history of the Russian language and techniques and methods of its lexicographical development, defines the role and significance of dictionaries in the development of theoretical linguistics, in studying the history and culture of the people. The history of lexicography is researched in connection with the socio-historical conditions in which it developed, inseparably from the history of culture, the development of which is also connected with the socio-historical conditions of people's life, their spiritual needs. Throughout its historical path, Russian lexicography has responded to the urgent needs of Russian society.

The book shows how the problems of dictionary studies had been gradually widening and deepening, new types and genres of dictionaries had been created, separate "branches" of lexicography had been formed, including the creation of literary, historical, dialectal, phraseological, synonymical dictionaries, dictionaries of national language (thesauruses), writers' dictionaries, and other types and forms of lexicographical editions.

A theory of lexicography is being elaborated, and its conceptual apparatus and language are being formed. Thus a definite system of lexicographical development of the language's lexical composition is being worked out, with all its elements closely interconnected. Over the long period of its development, Russian lexicography has developed a number of principles that form the basis of its tradition, its essence being the doctrine of the word, the lexical system, the study of vocabulary and semantics in a broad cultural and historical aspect.
